Why I'm Staying Away From Holiday Sales

There's a big mall that's a stone's throw away from where I live. It's Christmas season and there are sales left and right. But I won't be lining up in any store to buy things, not even makeup.

If you've come across this space before, you've already learned about my stance on makeup and minimalism. (If you're not in the mood to switch tabs, I'll explain it here: I don't want to feed my hoarding tendencies, so I keep my beauty arsenal small.) I'll admit that it's incredibly hard to do, especially since I could easily just walk to a mall and get drawn in by the countless products that promise to hide my under-eye circles, make my lips plumper or give my face a flawless finish.

I love makeup. I do. I just refuse to regard it the same way I do my other passions. I love makeup but I don't want to be tied to the idea that I need to have a lot of products to prove that I am invested in it. I love the art of it. I love the way I look after I've curled my lashes and put on a couple of coats of mascara. I love that putting makeup on makes me feel good during a bad day.

I enjoy makeup. And that's why I'm keeping myself from holiday sales. Sure, nobody's obliging me to buy anything. But when you're presented with a vast array of products that make your heart skip a beat, it's difficult to turn away.

It's tempting. It's hard to refuse. But I don't want to give in.

I'm staying away from holiday sales because I want to be more aware of the things I currently have and I don't want to make myself believe that I need something I really don't just because its price is marked down.

Here's my mantra: If I need it and it will be beneficial to me, I'll buy it.

It's a silly thought, but I'm sticking with it.

  1. I agree with you. I have an arsenal of beauty supplies, in fact too many of them. This is a great article; we overindulge too much when we need to do little.

  3. It seems like everyone is joining this line of thinking and I'm so glad. It's exhausting trying to keep up with consumerism this time of year. I'm with you, let's appreciate the things we already have.
