How I Deal With Acne Scars: Treatment & Prevention

Sharing is caring!

Getting acne at 26 was an unwelcome surprise. Imagine, after going through puberty with just a sprinkling of the odd pimple every now and then and suddenly getting huge pimples when you least expect them? It was a horrible time, folks. And then I was able to manage it. But the battle wasn’t over then. I was left with dark marks. To this day, acne scars treatment is a part of my routine.

My Acne Scars Treatment and Prevention Routine

The main thing to do about acne scars is lightening them. My face is not completely free from hyper-pigmentation but these are what have worked for me.

Exfoliating with the Pixi Glow Tonic

Part of my routine is using the Pixi Glow Tonic to slough off the dead skin cells.

This cult-favorite and I weren’t friends at first. But after some time, I picked it up again and it has since been a tremendous help in keeping my skin’s texture and appearance clear and smooth. It really does give you glow. But aside from that, products glide on easier and get absorbed faster. I use it just twice a week at night.

Lightening with Dear Klairs Freshly Juiced Drop Vitamin C Serum

For lightening dark spots, I rely on the Dear Klairs Freshly Juiced Drop Vitamin C Serum.

I mix a couple of drops of this with my moisturizer but I’ve stopped doing so lately because I’m testing a moisturizer for work and want to know how effective it is on its own. After I’m done reviewing that, I’ll surely go back to this because it really does help lighten the spots on my face and give me a glow.

Brightening with the Skin Inc Optimizer Voyage Tri-Light++

Brightening my spots with the help of the yellow LED light from the Skin Inc Optimizer Voyage Tri-Light.

Although I don’t really use this often as part of my acne scars treatment regimen, I find that LED therapy does give brightening effect on my skin. I need to use it more, though, because I only do so once a month. (By the way, here‘s my review of the gadget in case you’re interested.)

Dealing with texture with Sunday Riley A+ High Dose Retinoid Serum

For skin texture, I use the Sunday Riley A+ High-Dose Retinoid Serum.

I’m glad I tested this out for work. I’m still a retinoid newbie, so being able to test-drive this has been a treat. It has really helped with my skin texture and gives my skin a more even appearance. I don’t think I’ll have the heart to buy a bottle after I’ve finished the one I have, though. But I’m sure to continue my retinoid journey. My eyes are already set on the Inkey List.

In the morning, I make sure to slather on sunscreen.

Prevention with an anti-acne routine

I won’t say that my current routine that mostly consists of the Althea Bare Essentials kit is anti-acne, but it has helped keep bad juju at bay. So having a solid core routine is a must. I’m still deciding whether I’d switch to a lower-pH cleanser but so far I’m enjoying the results I’m getting from the products I’ve been using.

Another thing I’m doing in the prevention front is being patient when I get hormonal acne. When before I would pick at a pimple as soon as it comes, now I’d wait for it to fully heal.

How about you? What’s your acne scars treatment and prevention routine like?
